ninanni: (katana and katana)
[personal profile] ninanni
So, my fanfiction has a lot of elements in it that are inspired by Supernatural and that includes the symbols and sigils used on the show. I used a few of them in the first chapter, and I just wanted to keep the information about them in one place. Papers get lost and I want to be able to come back to this later.

Basicaly this is what I used as a guide. I didn't use the triquetra symbol in the back (i'm 99.9% sure that thats what that symbol is), because I wanted to find a concealment rune. I thought it made more sense to use a mixture of protection and concealment since Payton was trying to stay hidden in the motel. The triquertra is a unity symbol. Maybe the triangle with the circled points adds the protection (the three points are supposed to symbolize the Holy Trinity) but I didn't use it. Circles tend to symbolise infinity or something unbroken. When you put something in a circle you protect it. (disclaimer I have no idea if that's true, but it's something I've noticed with some research I did on Native American symbols for Payton's tattoo that I'll post)
Fun Fact
: The diamonds in the corner of the door with the 'x' through it is a Norse Runeletter Gar. It's associated with Odin's spear which never missed it's mark and always returned to Odin's hand. The safe in the picture held Samule Colt's gun, so I found it interesting that those markings were there.
Helpful Links: I'm probably going to leach a lot of information from [ profile] spn_symbols in the future so here's a link to them (its where I got that bit about the Gar rune). Idk if they're still updating but... was also lot of help. It's a good resource and a good place to start your research if you're looking for a specific symbol.

The Eye of Horus

  • The Eye of Horus, represents the moon and it's phases. The myth says that Horus' left eye is ripped out by Thoth and replaced as the moon waxes and wanes. It's personified by the Goddess Wadjet. The symbol itself is called The Wadjet or "The Whole One"

  • Apparently the Eye of Horus and the Eye of Ra are synonimous, but there are some sources that say the Eye of Ra does the opposite, and is a powerful destructive force and associate with the 'Daughter of Ra' who waged war on mankind, nearly killing everyone. I think the distinction is between the left eye and the right eye. The left eye is the moon, Horus, and the right is Ra, the sun.

  • "The Eye of Horus was believed to have healing and protective power, and it was used as a protective amulet. It was also used as a notation of measurement, particularly for measuring the ingredients in medicines and pigments. The symbol was divided into six parts, representing the shattering of Horus´ eye into six pieces. Each piece was associated with one of the six senses and a specific fraction." (x)

The Star of David/The Seal of Solomon

  • This symbol is freaking everywhere. They use it a lot in Supernatural to guard curse boxes. It's on the door of the safe in the picture. They used it to protect the Colt and on the curse box in season seven, they paint it on the barn in season 4. It's just everywhere and apparently its a protective symbol

  • According to legend it was given to the King by God in the form of a ring made from brass and iron directly from heaven and was used to seal written commands to good and evil spirits, respectively. Evetually became a talisman, a magical symbol used in alchemy.

  • In supernatural, the spaces inbetween the star (the compass points) and the circle are filled in by (what I'm assuming are) Enochian symbols that are probably the 'commands to good and evil spirits'. I guess you could use the Seal for anything if you use the right symbols in those spaces. I'll add more information as I find it.

  • The book, 'The Lesser Key of Solomon', is a book that is focused on demonology. It's divided into five books: the Ars Goetia, the Ars Theurgia-Goetia, the Ars Paulina, the Ars Almadel, and the Ars Notoria. It lists the seventy-two demonds as well as spells and rituals to summon and control them.

  • I found this picture on wikipedia, and some of the symbols look similar to the ones in the safe. I'm still trying to find out what they mean, but a pattern that seems to be cropping up a lot is the pieces of symbols. Like the Eye of Horus has several pieces that give it it's power. I think these are the symbols for the Seal. Like a legend on a map or a word bank on a test or something.

Wolfstar The Druid - Rune Readings online & face-to-face in Victoria, Australia

  • I got this one from a website called 'Wolfstar the Druid'. I have no idea how accurate he is, but it served the purpous of my story so I'm not asking to many questions.

  • According to him it's an Icelandic Rune of concelment "...sometimes from a past life, the unknowable, Pertho can be like the safe that needs a key to unlock it..."

  • "Runes are vibrational energies that Wolfstar has come to know as the very foundation of our universe. After a nine hour ritual in the manner of Odin, it took him two years to begin to understand and feel each of the 24 individual Runic vibrations. They are a language, but not a verbal language; they are a language of energy vibration.

So the meanings that follow are only rough and very basic clues to the Rune vibrations. After your Rune Reading with Wolfstar the Druid you can compare his notes with this page to see roughly how he has come to his interpretation. However many factors play a role in a reading such as how the Runes fall in 360 degrees and proximity and relation to nearby Runes making billions of possible patterns and combinations. The only constant is the pattern starts with the Rune falling furthest away from Wolfstar then flows back toward him.

  • Like I said, I don't know how accurate he is, but Perl-thro got what I needed done, which was to hide Payton in the motel. I'll probably do some rune research later but for now I'm just taking it at face value.
